Three of the Shangri-Las showing the world just now to wear pastel pants. Bottom: Conservative skirts and blouses vs. sleek jumpsuits and go-go boots on two of their record sleeves.
In the mid-1960s, radio was in L-U-V with girl groups. The Ronettes, the Marvelettes, the Chiffons, and the Shirelles all performed poppy songs that youve probably heard on your local oldies station. One of my favorites, if not for their fashion sense alone, is the Shangri-Las. Coordinated outfits featuring white go-go boots, happy colors, and amazingly teased hair? Yes!
The Shangri-Las, whose singles were released from 1964 to 1967, specialized in evocative harmonies of teen alienation, family, and candy-coated romance. While many of their songs are heavy on the I love my guy more than anything, their tunes have punchy beats, engaging cadence, and lightweight bop. The marvelous Pop Girl Dress sets the tone for a retro party.
