As almost anyone who has ever had a haircut knows, the stylists or barbers chair is more than a place to get a trim or some color. Stylists and barbers often serve as confidants and advisers, with many barbershops and hair salons becoming something of a community hub.

Its that close relationship between stylists and barbers and their clients that inspired N.C. State sophomore Alton Russell and a group of his friends to start Tell a Hairdresser (), a grassroots effort to educate North Carolinians voting on May 8 about the proposed amendment to the state Constitution that would define marriage.
